Herring

Herring
slips through current;
patterned silver scarf
with barnacles of white sweet teeth
that bite through threads:
cutting scales
that shimmer in the wet wild water.

Herring
hung on hook
to pickle
sparkle on the cutting board
in breakfast nook
’til teeth bite clean
the scaley skin
and tongues touch tangy tendon’s
heaving herring haunches
