space is:

negative and positive

light and dark

expanding and contracting

occupied and available

eternal and time locked

translucent and dense

the watercolor knows its mystery…

One Day

by Laura Foley

I didn’t read the news.

I raked a rainbow

of pungent autumn leaves,

played abroad with happy dogs,

held my granddaughter in my arms,

and sat beneath an amiable maple,

attentive to current events.

Schwinn

by George Bilgere

One day my mother astonished me

by getting astride my bike,

the heavy old balloon-tired Schwinn

I used for my afternoon paper route,

and pedaling away down the street,

skirt flying, hair blown back,

a girl again in the wind and speed

that had nothing to do

with pulling double shifts at the hospital,

or cooking meatloaf, or sewing up my jeans,

the old bike carrying her away

from my father dead of booze,

and her own nightly bottle

of red wine in front of the news.

She flew down the road so far

I could barely see her,

then slowly pedaled back to me,

and stepped off the bike, my mom again.

take time to talk

A Time to Talk
by Robert Frost

When a friend calls to me from the road
And slows his horse to a meaning walk,
I don’t stand still and look around
On all the hills I haven’t hoed,
And shout from where I am, ‘What is it?’
No, not as there is a time to talk.
I thrust my hoe in the mellow ground,
Blade-end up and five feet tall,
And plod: I go up to the stone wall
For a friendly visit.
