I need to look inside to discover the words.
And then they have to be ordinary things.
Of course, I have to edit in snappy sounds, rhyme and rhythm.
The beat grabs hearts.
DNA writes for me.
I hope you feel what I feel.
And are moved.

those winter stories…

“Those Winter Sundays,” by Robert Hayden,
from Angel of Ascent (Liveright).
Sundays too my father got up early
and put his clothes on in the blueblack cold,
then with cracked hands that ached
from labor in the weekday weather made
banked fires blaze. No one ever thanked him.
I’d wake and hear the cold splintering, breaking.
When the rooms were warm, he’d call,
and slowly I would rise and dress,
fearing the chronic angers of that house,
Speaking indifferently to him,
who had driven out the cold
and polished my good shoes as well.
What did I know, what did I know
of love’s austere and lonely offices?
When I grew to womanhood I learned how my love kept me warm.

grace comes to
call you for a service…
He chooses one to
love everyone
to reach everyone.
He calls all for a service.
Reach inside
to find the servant.

Light in the darkness…

DAILY MEDITATION |
NOVEMBER 30, 2023
A Prayer
Dear Lord,
Give me eyes to see and ears to hear. I know there is light in the darkness that makes everything new. I know there is new life in suffering that opens a new earth for me. I know there is a joy beyond sorrow that rejuvenates my heart. Yes, Lord, I know that you are, that you act, that you love, that you indeed are Light, Life, and Truth. People, work, plans, projects, ideas, meetings, buildings, paintings, music, and literature all can only give me real joy and peace when I can see and hear them as reflections of your presence, your glory, your kingdom.
Let me then see and hear. Let me be so taken by what you show me and by what you say to me that your vision and hearing become my guide in life and impart meaning to all my concerns.
Let me see and hear what is really real, and let me have the courage to keep unmasking the endless unrealities, which disturb my life every day. Now I see only in a mirror, but one day, O Lord, I hope to see you face to face.
Amen.
Henri J. M. Nouwen
He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them… Immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take courage. It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

Come out of yourself…proclaim the Gospel…leave selfishness behind…cross all borders…open and expand…

Feel like you are at the service of the gospel.
It is for everyone.
Come out of yourself!
Proclaim the capacity to cross all borders.
Leave selfishness behind.
Meet in the world, not in the sacristy.
Be open and expansive!

Some things I have in common with William Blake, born in London in 1757:
1 As a child we had visions of God, angels, prophets, and guardian angels.
2 We both were appointed to study engraving.
3 We both privately printed our own books.
4 We both believe the human soul leaves the body and rises to Heaven in Joy.
5 We both experimented with illuminated etchings.
6 When we view the sun rising, we see innumerable angels of the Heavenly Host.
7 We both see innumerable spirits of many historical figures.
Just before he died, his countenance became fair. His eyes brightened and he burst into singing of the things he saw in Heaven.
He said: “Without minute neatness of execution, the sublime cannot exist! Grandeur of ideas is founded on precision of ideas.”
These notes are from Garrison Keiller, edited by Jeanne Poland

Visionaries create changes in energy
changes in weather
changes in equality
changes in imagination
changes in light
changes in power

“The first who to need to be evangelized are us: we Christians. And this is very important. Immersed in today’s fast-pace and confused environment, we too indeed may find ourselves living our faith with a subtle sense of renunciation, persuaded that the Gospel is no longer heard and no longer worth striving to proclaim. We might even be tempted by the idea of letting “others” go their own way.”
