Teacups on the rungs of the ladder

Ladder

I used to dream
I was a nun
with habit to my ankles
climbing a ladder
each rung holding a delicate china teacup.

I never spilled the tea
or broke the cup

or reached the top of the ladder
but woke up startled
at the risks that snuggled next to me
in bed.

train in the rain

train in the rain
use touch.

pitter-patter
on your head

moisture in your joints
oil for your soul

clouds in your breath
a cloudy stage

to train in the rain.

My Sayings of the Blind

We experience eternity as the dawn of time. Welcome to the light!

My soles touch your soul.

It is easier to put myself “in your shoes” than for you to be in mine.

I wear out my soles before my sight.

My God and I are intimate; we feel each other in the dark.

I use touch screens differently; I hear alerts as alarms.

We are equal, sighted brothers. I can tell from your touch.

Giving a Poetry Reading

Some say I’m a witch
casting alchemy spells

or a bitch
with rich relatives

or whisk broom
sweeping up debris

but the truth is
I am a wish for grandeur

a swishing, itching, bristling poet
a rhyming, riotous boisterous bard!

Translation (not a poem)

Calligraphy by Jim Sandler (step out like a “k”)

“Andiammo!”
step out like a “K”

lift your umbrella in a salute
urging the tourists on

don’t hold back like an “s”
(slink like a snake)

boldly strike out
pointy toed

advance with vigor
guard of the future!

A Poem About Itself

A Poem About Itself

this poem is my story:

once upon a time
it swam
then breathed
cried
coo-ed
touched
and finally became
my mother and father…
a pea in the pod.

Hair Color

My grands like to joke about my hair color

Jan Hutchinson has been delighting us with daily prompts for Poetry Month. Today’s poem should sound like a child wrote it.

Multi-color hair
Crayola Crayons

“Your hair is red,
Your hair is black;
I see it now as blue.
Soon we’re back

To brown and then
Your hair is green:”
Crayons in Crayola Box!
Hair color fit for Queen!

( I scrutinize the roots for a mirror clue;
But find none, save: imagination!)

Went to Maine and so I need to recall this Wesley McNair

Mangling a Proverb:

He is not wise that parrots the wise.

Wendy Videlock

Last night
we listened to
Wesley McNair
the Maine Poet Laureate
@the delightful Southwest Harbor Library.
He read:
“When She Wouldn’t”
a poem about his Mom’s death
a lost child
with complex family feelings from the Ozark’s.
Her language:
“Mo”
“This a way-that  a way”
“Goin’”
brought reconciliation and gratitude
in the end.

His notes,
written in longhand
told a harsh story
its grief
and glory.

Many poets read
when he had finished.

They parroted
the sentiments;
but mostly griped about the cold winter.

And thus,
left his wisdom in the snow

to thaw
its lonesome way home.

Using My Flotation

floating
is an option.

but only relaxed breathing
will keep me afloat

in the final baptism
a holy immersion in water

a view of the sky
the blue dimension

from ocean to whiteness
the clarity of the creator

her universal forgiveness
her desire to be one with me

A Recipe for Polyamorous Sex

I loved Joseph Greeley in his First Communion suit, 7 years old and Irish. He was fresh.

Then there was Ray Siller, 17, who scotch-skipped with me free range in Queens.

Next was John Atherly Poland, a defrocked trappist priest, 38, who met me on the NYC subway. He turned me into a photographer and film maker.

Charles Aybar, my roller skating coach, moved me on wheels.

Gino Calderone guided me through Italian, Portuguese, French and South America.

When I was 47, I met my closest mate, Donald Smith, a computer technician.

The poly-pie is complete. We have a topping of trust, respect ,intimacy and hot, flavorful herbs, fresh, crispy, soft and personal.
