Thinkers and their eggs

3EggsPoem

eggs by Jeanne in inDesign (with her tech: Don, patiently lining up three eggs)

When I taught in Catholic elementary school,

I had to remind the children every day that they were a circle

and there was no way to be first on line.

They were fiercely competitive

when the essence of the Good News was to be a happy circumference,

a yellow yolk in the white.

Most of the children were black,

but all shades use the same colors to paint their portraits.

It’s a question of values, isn’t it?

Dirty Laundry

Dirty Laundry

Twitter
throws out
Trump’s dirty laundry
at our feet.

Facebook
washes it out
with comments.

Instagram
walls it from
entry.

Angels
prohibit it
from adding
to the Apocalypse.

God’s power
is deeper
than the media
cleaner
fresher
dried in the sun.

Nimble

nimble as a thimble
on my thumb

deft as a needle
flying thread

e  a  r  t  h

ear to hear
eat to grow
heat to warm
hare to jump into my lap
that’s what e a r t h gives to me.

heart rate
hat to shelter
eat to taste
hate to warn me
that’s what e a r t h gives to me.

it’s a mother
it’s a father
it’s a sibling too.
most of all, a god like me
that’s what e a r t h brings to me!

The Little Teaser

the Little Teaser

“You can’t paint at all”
“You’re a terrible sketcher”
says the teaser.

“You can’t drive either”
“You get lost on the way”
taunts the teaser.

Perchance these are the tasks
which challenge my grandson:
the grand teaser!

Where are you, owenapoland?

Where are you, owenapoland?

you’ve vacated Facebook
can’t find you on Instagram.

and with you…
went my grandchildren!

does privacy have a wall
around my grands?

hiding a rich tradition
of Jeanne and genes?

Through the windows of the kitchen…

Ruby by Lea Lyon

Through the windows of the kitchen…

These were the only windows that side of the house.
Opened on a narrow alley,
but to the west was a garden
with flowers nurtured by my Italian dad.

Through the panes,
we spied the siblings riding their two wheelers
with a screaming appetite for 6PM supper.

the aroma of fresh spaghetti sauce
warmed our nostrils, piqued our saliva.

Six places were set, equally welcoming.
The youngest child was under the table
waiting to surprise someone.
We always pretended to play the script!

Listened.
Laughed.
Ate .
Cleaned up.
Finished the dishes.
Together.

Through the window,

content.
