Where does the saying: “Carpe Diem” come from?

author-Homer-engraving-Iliad-Odyssey

It’s the birthday of Roman poet Horace, born in Apulia, Italy (65 B.C.E.). He is most famous for his Odes, which take up a diverse set of topics, including springtime, Virgil, a friend’s farm, Cleopatra’s defeat, old age, and the Roman Empire.
Various of Horace’s Odes have been translated by Ben Jonson, John Milton, Alexander Pope, William Wordsworth, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Robert Lowell, and even John Quincy Adams.
One of the most famous phrases popularized by Horace is carpe diem, sometimes translated as “seize the day.” Carpe diem comes from Horace’s Ode I-XI, the 11 ode in his first book.
Heather McHugh translated one ode:
“Get wise. Get wine, and one good filter for it.
Cut that high hope down to size, and pour it
into something fit for men. Think less
of more tomorrows, more of this
one second, endlessly unique: it’s
jealous, even as we speak, and it’s
about to split again …”

“Let us remember one thing: with Jesus, there is always the possibility of beginning again. It’s never too late. There is always the possibility to begin again. Be courageous. He is near to us, and this is the time of conversion. Everyone might think: “I have this situation inside, this problem that I am ashamed of”. But Jesus is next to you. Begin again. There is always the possibility of taking a step forward. He is waiting for us and never gets tired of us. He never gets tired! And we are annoying, but he never gets tired! And let us not let this Advent go by like days on the calendar because this is a moment of grace, a grace for us too, here, and now! May Mary, the humble servant of the Lord, help us to meet Him, Jesus, and our brothers and sisters on the way of humility, which is the only one that will help us go ahead.”

How Do I Find the Right Person for a Lifelong Relationship?

safeforlove

When you’re looking for love and companionship, it’s easy to become downhearted when the right person just never seems to come along. Worse still, if someone appears in your life yet they are not all that they seem, you can quickly feel disillusioned which is understandable.
Every one of us harbours a secret hope that we will discover the one who completes us and makes our lives worth living. We secretly long for someone who cherishes our flaws, welcomes us as we are, and sticks by our sides through thick and thin. Yet as we get older, the unpredictability of life will stifle even our wildest hopes and most elaborate imaginations.
So, you’re probably sitting reading this thinking, “Why is finding the right person for me so difficult?!” Thankfully, today is the day you get answers, direction, and a positive new outlook using the Romance Angels Oracle Cards by Doreen Virtue. And, you know what? You WILL find “the one” for you!

Why Can’t I Find “The One?” What Am I Doing Wrong?
What is immediately clear is that you have been worrying about opening yourself up for a long time. Perhaps this is because you have been hurt badly in the past, so you are naturally and understandably afraid of giving too much again in case history repeats itself.

attractionromabticlove

Since you’ve had some bad experiences in relationships, you’re taking precautions to prevent getting wounded again. You’ve asked the angels for help, but they can only deliver the amount of love you’ll allow into your heart. Bear in mind that love can’t enter your life if you have erected a barrier around your heart. You see shut off emotions will drive away the kind of companion you’re hoping to find. (You’ll probably know that already.) In addition to keeping you safe, listening to your intuition can let you experience the love and compassion of others around you. Consider carefully who you let into your life and listen to your gut when it tells you whether or not someone can be trusted. If you make it a point to ask the angels for help finding supportive people (such as a love companion), they will provide, so long as you pay attention to and take their advice. What Steps Can I Take Today to Find the Right Life Partner?Rather than using excessive effort, the greatest approach to increase love in your life is via good old- fashioned attraction. When you’re completely immersed in the moment and revelling in it, that’s when you’re at your most alluring. Your genuine happiness radiates through your smiles, positive energy, and mannerisms.

On the other hand, any anxiety you feel when you try to find love goes against the grain of your existence. You need to try to embrace life by living in the moment. Do your best to enjoy the little things that bring you the most happiness. Constantly remind yourself that you are a beloved, loving person.

Envision yourself in a happy and fulfilling love relationship. Be kind to yourself and listen to your intuition. Remember that when you give out an air of attraction by being happy and positive, you get so much back in return!

freeyourselfforlove

If you currently feel confined in your life, it’s the perfect moment to take back the reins. You might feel trapped in your job or partnership because you’ve given up too much power to others.
By getting in touch with your inner self, you’ll be able to identify the points at which this resonates strongly with you. One question to ponder is, “How do I feel challenged?” You can put your faith on the information you are given by the angels as well as from your inner self.
Remember that you can’t feel love unless you’re willing to let yourself be vulnerable. Although doing so may force you to confront sources of unhappiness in your life, this is actually a good thing.
You see, if you make up your mind to reclaim your life, your emotions will begin to soften and emerge as a result. Because of this, you will be more able to appreciate all the amazing gifts life has to offer! So, take back your power today, pinpoint what your challenges are and start working on those straight away. You CAN and WILL find your forever person.

What would the pace of your life be if you went on “soul time” instead of clock time?

How did Hilary Clinton feel about being paid 10%less as a female president?

Calvin Trillin, journalist and humorist, was born in Kansas City, Missouri. His father was a grocer who wanted Trillin to be president someday, but Trillin preferred to daydream about being a disc jockey. He admits he didn’t read much as kid, but at Yale University he became the chairman of the Yale Daily News and later covered civil rights for Time Magazine before becoming a staff writer at The New Yorker (1963), where he stayed for more than 40 years. Trillin writes most often about American politics, culture, and food. One critic said, “Trillin is to food writing what Chaplin was to film acting.”Trillin writes a short column for The Nation called “Deadline Poet,” in which he pokes fun at politics and politicians. He once wrote a ditty called “If You Knew What Sununu” about New Hampshire Governor John Sununu and a short poem about Secretary of State Hilary Clinton’s presidential campaign: “So if playing the “woman card” really / Is entrenched now in Hillary’s plans, / She’s a bargain: Her president’s paycheck / Will be 10 percent less than a man’s.”Inequity between women and men….And the lesser sex…

Think and Do
by Ron Padgett
I always have to be doing something, accomplishing some-
thing, fixing something, going somewhere, feeling purposeful,
useful, competent—even coughing, as I just did, gives me the
satisfaction of having “just cleared something up.” The phone
bill arrives and minutes later I’ve written the check. The world
starts to go to war and I shout, “Hey, wait a second, let’s think
about this!” and they lay down their arms and ruminate. Now
they are frozen in postures of thought, like Rodin’s statue, the
one outside Philosophy Hall at Columbia. His accomplish-
ments are muscular. How could a guy with such big muscles be
thinking so much? It gives you the idea that he’s worked all his
life to get those muscles, and now he has no use for them. It
makes him pensive, sober, even depressed sometimes, and
because his range of motion is nil, he cannot leap down from
the pedestal and attend classes in Philosophy Hall. I am so
lucky to be elastic! I am so happy to be able to think of the
word elastic, and have it snap me back to underwear, which
reminds me: I have to do the laundry soon.

You have been touched by God…

IMG_0383

Advent welcomes the Divine Father, the redemptive Son and the Spirit Sanctifier.
All one with the humans on earth and saved them from drowning.
The Spirit annointed them with fire.
Learn to be a traveler. Direction matters.
The cosmos moves; changes direction.
Always Godward! How do get to Buddha?
Swim upstream in the rush called Advent.
Find the wilderness before the promised land. The Spirit is here crying out “Wake up”
We need God’s conviction!. We can miss God’s conviction. We can miss love, forgiveness and joy, freedom , hope, and Peace.

Respond! Turn toward the light of Christ!
The New Age is being born!
Dwell in the future where the shoots of God’s incarnation are coming.

When the Holy One has redeemed the land, the child and the wasp shall dwell together.

God will gather the faithful and give them a seat at his right hand forever!

Help! I’m shrinking…

Jeanne

Yes, I also cannot reach the top shelves anymore and I have a hump on my back like my Grandmama. We both have diabetes too and hearing loss. My mother skipped these illnesses, but died of cancer since she liked alcohol and cigarettes. Everyone loved her generosity and christian faith. She was loyal to my father too.
My heart matters to all in my family. My height, not so much!

trying not to wake anyone up,

sitting here on the blue porch

a milksnake,

realizing again I am shrinking

the picture taken last month in which

    my son

rises above my head

so much like the one

taken of me and my father as we stood

    in front of St. Bernard’s,

my graduation diploma in my folded hands,

his pockmarked face looking into my neck,

my padded shoulders level with his bloodshot

    eyes,

and I know the bells were ringing

and the people all around us were laughing and

   loudly talking,

that cars swished by in the afternoon sun

but I just looked down on my father’s waved hair,

smelled the Schaefer’s on his dark breath,

refusing to shake his hand which even now

holds itself out, twenty-three years after

    his death,

into this clear-night December Pennsylvania air.

Invest in your health…

60229181_10219251113733186_8900109553794809856_n

Can I Invest in My Health?

”When you invest your time, cash, and effort in something, you increase the return on those resources. So, it stands to reason that the best possible investment that you can ever undertake is in your own wellbeing.More than anything else, having good health will give you the capacity to take on the challenges that life, your desires, and your goals will throw at you. Your wellbeing should be your first priority, and you should focus on giving it the time and attention it deserves.Putting time into working on your health is a preventative measure, rather than a curative one. Therefore, taking care of yourself in the present means that you can reap the benefits later in life, and today we are using the Indigo Angels Oracle Cards to answer your questions. What’s Been Stopping Me From Being as Healthy as Possible? It’s true that you have been so busy recently. In fact, it’s probably not even a new development that you’re doing so much that you have been unable to take some time to yourself to reach your health goals. You seem to have been going and going without being able to take a rest or time out for yourself.

If you actually think about it, you have been in this pattern for quite some time now and even when you have made the decision to get healthier, it has tended to fall by the wayside. What you need to do, is to put yourself first, but you already know that. You owe it to yourself to make the most of every opportunity you have to create the healthy, positive future that you truly deserve. So, look within yourself in order to find the strength and the focus to create the positive amazing healthy future you deserve. How Can I Find the Time to Invest in My Health? You’ve heard that old saying that “Two heads are better than one.” So, if you’re looking at getting healthier then why not team up with a friend or two. That way you will be able to support each other, share tips and ideas and even go to the gym or out walking, swimming or anything else with each other!

The power of friendship can and should never be underestimated. When you have good people around you, you can achieve everything and anything you wish to. You will always have someone to talk to and to buoy your energy when you feel down or lacking in get-up-and-go.
In addition, your new health journey may also involve making new friends as you try out new sports and ways of eating healthy and keeping fit. You could even sign up to a healthy cooking class to meet some new people while gaining new skills!

Now is the time to focus on your dreams. Perhaps you wish to lose a bit of weight or to be able to run a marathon. Set yourself a goal then work on achieving it. Focusing on your dreams is never a silly thing to do no matter how unattainable you feel that these are.

You deserve to have an amazing life where you can reach for the stars and have everything that you wish for (within reason!) Just remember to stay realistic in terms of what you are working towards.
If you’ve never walked much in your life, you’re never going to be able to run 100 miles within the week. So, set out some little attainable goals that you reward yourself for along the way as you achieve them.
It’s good for you to value your health. You’ll find out just how good it is as you travel along your new health journey!

The words of the savvy Mark Twain…

best-mark-twain-quotes-jpg

He became known for his ability to rally disheartened Britons during World War II. One of many examples:

“The whole fury and might of the enemy must very soon be turned on us.

Hitler knows that he will have to break us in this Island or lose the war.

If we can stand up to him, all Europe may be free and the life of the world may move forward into broad, sunlit uplands.

But if we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new Dark Age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science.

Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that, if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, ‘This was their finest hour.'”

Winston Churchill

In his unfinished novel, The Mysterious Stranger, Mark Twain wrote, “Sanity and happiness are an impossible combination. No sane man can be happy, for to him life is real, and he sees what a fearful thing it is. Only the mad can be happy, and not many of those.”

One of the most quotable of authors, Mark Twain said:
“It were not best that we should all think alike; it is difference of opinion that makes horse races.”

And “Truth is mighty and will prevail. There is nothing the matter with this, except that it ain’t so.”

And “Familiarity breeds contempt — and children.”

And “The secret source of humor itself is not joy but sorrow. There is no humor in heaven.”
