Green Canoe

I don’t often get the chance any longer
to go out alone in the green canoe
and, lying in the bottom of the boat,
just drift where the breeze takes me,
down to the other end of the lake
or into some cove without my knowing
because I can’t see anything over
the gunwales but sky as I lie there,
feeling the ribs of the boat as my own,
this floating pod with a body inside it …

also a mind, that drifts among clouds
and the sounds that carry over water—
a flutter of birdsong, a screen door
slamming shut—as well as the usual stuff
that clutters it, but slowed down, opened up,
like the fluff of milkweed tugged
from its husk and floating over the lake,
to be mistaken for mayflies at dusk
by feeding trout, or be carried away
to a place where the seeds might sprout.

my back had spasmed, sending me
to the ER, where I got drugs
but no relief. So I winced and nodded;
she fixed me with her dark eyes, put
a solid arm around my shoulders,
and said, You’re going to be all right.
Then, swift as water flowing around rock,
she snapped back into her role, hitched up
her belt, motioned the next person in line
to come on through. And I was left wondering
what had just happened, and what was I supposed
to make of it? But I was in the terminal,
washed in the artificial light, and the moving
walkway pulled me forward, carried me away.

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.
Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.
But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate — we can not consecrate — we can not hallow — this ground. 1 My childhood was an adventure. My father was in the army overseas during WWII. Meanwhile my mother was struggling with 3 young children on her own.
As a toddler I was traumatically molested by my grandfather.Met my Dad in 1945.Catholic school brought me an education, led by Dominican nuns in Woodhaven, Queens. There were more molestations and scares later during elementary school. I was derivatively called: Fatso, Bowl full of jello, and Largeness by my siblings. High school sped by and I entered the convent in 1957 at 16 years of age.
2 What distracts me from my daily plans?
Music, Writing, Reading, Streaming, exercise, cooking, cleaning, learning,obsessions,anxiety, pseudo-anxiety.
3 What sort of qualities are important for me in a partner?
A regular schedule, open honesty,able to apologize, discretion,creative, generous,patient,healthy emotionally, physically and spiritually, and having a sense of humor.
4 What truly interests me and excites me? Travel, culture, unspoiled territories, music, foods, art and culture, how families interact, all that I can learn from and teach others, collaborating on literature and teaching, designing graphics and pages in picture books, the evolution of democracy, colors, fabrics, and healing.
5 I handle constructive criticism poorly. I am very original, articulate and imaginative.I never blend in. Instead I stand out, and flit around like a hummingbird and don’t allow males in my nest! I move from one thing to another like a dragonfly and don’t stay in one place for long.
6 My best qualities are: determined, intelligent, committed, rhythmic,gifted singer,musician,generous, empathetic,curious.
7 Worst qualities: impatient, impetuous,bold,rigid,commanding,indelicate,stubborn,distractible, indiscrete,braggart. I am dramatic, unique,outgoing,selective and a mystic!

When I woke up yesterday morning and had my coffee, I felt almost compelled to sit down and read your cards immediately. The urge was too much to bear, because I was too excited by what I might find, so I sat down as soon as I could and began. It’s my hope that you’ve been well since our last contact, because I can feel a sense of excitement from you, though tempered with a little anxiety – it’s time to be patient and kind to yourself, especially in the midst of all you’ve been learning!

Last time, there were some stern warnings contained within the cards about this very thing – as stress becomes reintroduced to you, you may feel the urge to fall victim to it’s sorrow but there it no time to look backwards, f – we only move forward now. No matter what comes your way, you have evolved beyond your old self, and are a beacon of light. Remember that.

The Ace of Cups  

This tickled me as I had my morning coffee, I have to admit. The Ace of Cups is a lovely card to get and one that represents passion, love and new or renewed relationships. In this time of training and life-changing revelations, perhaps you’ve been neglecting your passionate life, a life of romance, but this tells me that soon that will change. Perhaps an old flame will contact you, or your next date will end in a stronger relationship than you once thought – your current partner may be planning a surprise for you you simply didn’t expect! This also means it’s a ripe time for you to go afer what it is you want from your romantic life – don’t be shy about reaching out and showing those you love how much you love them, taking some time out of your schedule just for them. You won’t regret it!

The Seven of Swords  

The Seven of Swords is a much less optimistic card, but one that comes with a beneficial warning: it represents deception and betrayal. This is very distressing to hear I’m sure, but this also comes with a silver lining: now you know what it is that has been going on. You’ve no doubt had some minor suspicions lately, especially as you head for that upheaval that was mentioned a couple of weeks ago. This tells me that this darker time may be avoidable, and that who or what is engineering this could prevent it altogether. Due to the earlier presence of the Ace of Cups, I don’t think this person is very close to you – likely an acquaintance or perhaps a coworker? Before you accuse, however, temper your concern and just be more observant. It’s my belief that you will find the seed of deception before it brings you harm.

The Nine of Wands

As if to prove me right, I next pulled the Nine of Wands – a card that means courage, resilience and calling on one’s inner strength in the face of difficulties. When I first considered the card itself, I realized there are few other cards I could so associate with you. After everything you’ve overcome and all the obstacles you’ve had to face in your life, you have summoned your courage often – even when you first reached out to me! This test of faith that is coming is only a testament to your personal strength and with me at your side, you will persevere – this I guarantee. Consider the traditional image of the Nine of Wands if you ever feel your doubt – a strong man holding an oaken staff before a field of other staves, standing tall and proud. Channel him and remind yourself and others of your boundaries – you’ve lived through hardship and now is the time to seize control of your future. And don’t let anyone forget that.

Despite a disturbance in the form of the Seven of Swords, I see an exciting new horizon for you. One of love, friendship, care and deep passion from those around you. I see stronger trusts being established and strengthened bonds, as well as a moment coming where you will draw your line in the sand. You are like a warrior sailor, standing tall in the midst of a storm that seeks to batter your ship but you will steer yourself back into the calm and sunny seas soon enough. Rely on the people who love you, and remember to show your own love back in whatever way you can. You will receive back everything you offer and more, and as you march through life with an ever clearer understanding of your own self, this will be reflected in your successes, in your friends and in your dreams.

I’m glad to be at your side as we continue this incredible journey together, Jeanne – it’s actually a great honor. I have known many people who began as you did – confused and seeking aid to pull themselves from a terrible and repetitive cycle of despair – but I know so few who have ever pulled themselves out of it so quickly and with such power. Know that you can always rely on me, during these sessions and forever – I am deeply committed to you and your success and I hope you feel my admiration.

Our next session will be incredible, Jeanne, I can already feel it. As great changes move closer to your shore, you will have every tool you need to combat them.
