An Apple, Personified

You’re the “apple in my eye”

peeled and quartered

spiced with cloves

steamed with brown sugar

sauce for the soul

keeping the doctor away (one day at a time)

regular, like a pear

fresh off the tree (unlike an orange)

the red glow, the green luster

the shiny apple in my eye!

Asking my soul…

Hello little one,
under the basket.

Let your light shine dimly.
It’s enough.

Now the shadows are soft,
velvety.

Multitudes of grey,
warm and cool.

Soul tones; solitary
like a dove at dusk.

Ready to fly with
peace in its beak

On the wind
delicately.

A little Too Self-focused?

IMG_0030

Don in the Apple Store: iPad camera by Jeanne

Did you ever find yourself talking
and not listening? Endlessly chattering?

Giggling at your own accounts?
Playing at being a human GPS?

Are you focused on your own vocabulary?
definitions? data?

Do you interrupt the subordinates/
Vomiting up your green opinions?

Burping gas? Vapors half processed?
Tinged with vanity? Dominance?

Are you only human?
A little too self focused?

God knows you, loves you.
Forgives you. Gives you a tender heart…
And hope.

In her story “Eleven,” Sandra Cisneros says:  “What they don’t understand about birthdays and what they never tell you is that when you are eleven, you’re also ten, and nine, and eight, and seven, and six, and five, and four, and three, and two, and one.” Septuagenarians could say something similar, but it would take longer to say.  When we are very young, we view the elderly as if they were gentle aliens.  When my great aunt Ula turned 100, I asked her how it felt to be 100.  She twinkled at me and said, “You know, sometimes inside I still feel fourteen.”

How to ReallyLoveAChild

Callogram by Jeanne (words by Sark)

My April 4th poem:

(As if Autumn were my muse…)

As if 15 was too young for poetry,

even if she could fly!

I don’t want to learn from Elders

steeped in wisdom.

But from youth with eyes wide open:

Discovering.

In the here and now

Some say

there is no now,

just this hairline crack

between the past

and the future

in which we sense

our presence.

Others say

there is nothing

but the now,

and the now

is eternal,

expansive.

This is not an argument.

It’s a paradox.

Making love in Spring is “certain”!
Try it hanging from a tree, squirrel-y.!
Rabbit it in jumps in grass!
Pumping in a flash: gray and fur-y.!
