Subway Smell

subway smell
swims up nose
musty wheels
cling and spin

out my window
signs fly past
whoosh ‘n swish
whoosh ‘n swish

bodies push
heat swells
I collapse
pink dress spills

feet tramp through
on sunburnt hands
fowl my fingers
hair and dress

just a lump
a sunburnt pink-
dressed tramp
whoosh ‘n swish, whoosh ‘n swish, whoosh ‘n swish…

Ellen Hinsey-poet
“Contrary to a generally held view, poetry is a very powerful tool because poetry is the conscience of a society. […] No individual poem can stop a war — that’s what diplomacy is supposed to do. But poetry is an independent ambassador for conscience: It answers to no one, it crosses borders without a passport, and it speaks the truth. That’s why … it is one of the most powerful of the arts.”

H P Lovecraft  wrote science fiction, fantasy, and horror, a genre that during his life was called “weird fiction.

It was only after his death that some of the people he had corresponded with in letters were determined to share his work with the public, so they formed a press called Arkham House specifically as a way to publish Lovecraft’s work.

Fantasy and horror writers like Stephen King and Neil Gaiman consider Lovecraft one of their major influences, and Jorge Luis Borges wrote a story, “There Are More Things,” in memory of Lovecraft.

Lovecraft said: “I never ask a man what his business is, for it never interests me. What I ask him about are his thoughts and dreams.”

Are you part of the plot?
or
Are you part of the audience?

It’s taken me awhile to focus on what the Waldorf School wants for its students.
It doesn’t allow passive audiences.
Instead, fosters initiative.
Wants to develop collaboration
Respect and care for each other.

Yes, above shows how to use an iPad camera and filters,
but also how to watch each other, take turns and see and listen to each other.

I asked the 5 year old what days her 3 year old brother would be joining her at school.
She will attend 5 mornings; he, 2 mornings.
She answered, “maybe on soup day”.
On soup day, the children bring a fresh vegetable, and they cook a soup. The concoctions get mixed reviews.
We call this day “Friday”.
What is more important, to name and…

Atop the Hill

Once I was at a poetry workshop in PA and a poet from Chicago quoted my poem to me, She had committed it to memory 3 years earlier! Here it is:

Atop the hill where I reside at Hudson’s highest point, my townhouse spies.

Everything whistles, twists and flies:
Deer, and wind and goldfinch cries.

Vistas spread from mount to mount
While rivers’ waves too much to count

Rush on
Upon
The great beyond.

All Births Need Mothers

On this date in 1920,

NikolajDjatschenkothe 19th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified,

giving women the right to vote.

The first national constitutional amendment had been proposed in Congress in 1878, and in every Congress session after that. Finally, in 1919, it narrowly passed both houses of Congress and was sent to the states to be ratified. Most Southern states opposed the amendment, and on August 18, 1920, it all came down to Tennessee. The pro-amendment faction wore yellow roses in their lapels, and the “anti” faction wore red American Beauty roses. It was a close battle and the state legislature was tied 48 to 48. The decision came down to one vote: that of 24-year-old Harry Burn, the youngest state legislator. He had been expected to vote against it, but he had in his pocket a note from his mother, which read: “Dear Son: Hurrah, and vote for suffrage! Don’t keep them in doubt. I noticed some of the speeches against. They were bitter. I have been watching to see how you stood, but have not noticed anything yet. Don’t forget to be a good boy and help Mrs. Catt put the ‘rat’ in ratification. Your Mother.” He voted in favor of the amendment.

My Influences (A Sequel to Influences)

Note how the bird color is influenced by the black dots in the sunflower centers…

My Influences:
I lived among the roots of my older sister and brother:

study, create, excel at academia

loved the nuns; strove to please and be the best

loved the solidarity of the religious life, and the Catholic scholars, especially Teilhard de Chardin

Every time my sister dropped a boyfriend, I picked him up. The Daria’s, Ray Siller, Dominic Natoli, Peggy Canis.

At one point, my sister and I dated two brothers: the Salerno’s. Irish boys, Italian boys, and German boys!

Family was our entertainment and my Mother’s family had strong women and professional men with a generous share of priests and a deep Catholic devotion.

Daily Mass and Communion blessed our days.

Dad’s family had illegal liquor, mafia connections and the Family Lawyer.
