Today my 79 year old brother mourned the non-response of my daughter who uses texting instead of landline phone. My sister’s response to the storm weather report was to defy the wind and drive through it. I concurred.

Then brother warned relatives of danger of the storm and advised not to gather. The weather reports differed in each locale. There were many points of view.

The reunion was shelved; the ante was the only show. Each fox observed differing phenomena.

The ante rose and fell, blew and rearranged itself in soft drifts that froze. The ante froze in place. The curtain closed.

Am working on a picture book about the foxes tamed in Siberia. Ever since the Rhyming Picture Books Conference in NYC, I keep thinking about manuscripts that rhyme, but have concluded that to have a story, illustrations that bleed on the page and regular rhymes is simply too much for the page! Love J Patrick Lewis’s poetry anthologies but he doesn’t have to lay out the pages; the art director does. And there’s no story with a character who engages the reader from page 5 on…I’m also grappling with science (non-fiction) and animal characters (fictionalized)
Meanwhile, I’m trying to use Procreate on an iPad to illustrate. Being a tactile girl, the virtual tools are not a good fit!
Ho-hum on I go.

Beauty

She Walks in Beauty

by Lord Byron

She walks in beauty, like the night
     Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that’s best of dark and bright
     Meet in her aspect and her eyes:
Thus mellow’d to that tender light
     Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

One shade the more, one ray the less,
     Had half impair’d the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
     Or softly lightens o’er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express
     How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.

And on that cheek, and o’er that brow,
     So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
     But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
     A heart whose love is innocent!

Don’t read silence as

a no; don’t read reviews as

quality ratings.

Eva Ibbotson said: “After years of writing magazine stories and books for children, I am trying hard to break down the barrier between ‘romantic novels’ and ‘serious novels’ which are respectfully reviewed. My aim is to produce books that are light, humorous, even a little erudite but secure in their happy endings. One could call it an attempt to write, in words, a good Viennese waltz!”
