Poem for Quenby
New Years Eve 2014

Big girl panties
Carry you to greatness:
The family sees
its independent woman
and wants to be just like you when  they grow up.

Big girl capes
Carry you farther than all the ancestors-
Even to the shores of Iceland!
it’s volcanos, starkness, and wool dainties

Big girl feet
Step in places ne’er discovered,
Leave illuminated prints
For cats to follow
For wild fairies to adorn
With moss and loam and musk.

Poem for Owen
New Years Eve 2014

I love the way
you  loved Camden
these many years
And she has trusted you
With all the family pets
who come and go.

I love the way
you build such lovely things
to shelter and give rest:
arms of wood
Cradling with their love.

I love the way
you maintain simple
daily needs:
clean water, fresh bark,
warming fire, cozy niche
to ponder faith, patience and
marvelous belonging.

My ball is changing

through time-energy converts

human to divine!

  • The first Times Square Ball was made of wood and iron, weighed 700 pounds, and was lit by a hundred 25-watt bulbs.
  • Now, it’s made of Waterford crystal, weighs almost six tons, and is lit by more than 32,000 LED lights. The party in Times Square is attended by up to a million people every year.

Other cities have developed their own ball-dropping traditions.

  • Atlanta, Georgia, drops a giant peach.
  • Eastport, Maine, drops a sardine.
  • Ocean City, Maryland, drops a beach ball, and
  • Mobile, Alabama, drops a 600-pound electric Moon Pie.
  • In Tempe, Arizona, a giant tortilla chip descends into a massive bowl of salsa.
  • Brasstown, North Carolina, drops a Plexiglas pyramid containing a live possum; and
  • Key West, Florida, drops an enormous ruby slipper with a drag queen inside it.

II Corinthians 5:12-21

Christ’s love controls me.

Christ’s resurrection awaits me.

Christ’s spirit moves me.

Christ reconciles me.

Offers Himself.

I am His Ambassador.

I cannot abide sexual lust aside redemption.

Christ cleanses me.

Renews me.

I have a new identity.

Johannes Kepler

born in 1571

validated Copernicus’s theory of a sun-centered solar system

helped Isaac Newton discover the law of gravity

designed the first eyeglasses for near-sightedness and far-sightedness

explained that tides are caused by the moon

the sun rotates on an axis

and was the first to calculate the year of the birth of Jesus Christ by using planetary cycles.

To greet with joy the glorious morn,
Which angels welcomed long ago,
When our redeeming Lord was born,
To bring the light of Heaven below;
The Powers of Darkness to dispel,
And rescue Earth from Death and Hell.

Sir Isaac Newton said, “If I have seen further than others, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”
