daytime calls the dragonflies
moonlight masks their sleep;
while damselflies fly ‘neath the stars
and nap in bright of day.

dragonflies see all the colors we see, plus ultraviolet light and polarized light; they can detect the
flickering of light at twice the rate that we can

dragonflies catch most prey with their jaws; they can capture larger prey by grabbing it with their
front legs and stuffing it into their jaws

hunting dragonflies can also be classified as either perchers or fliers
… clubtails, skimmers, and damselflies are usually perchers – they find a tall perch with a good
view, like a grass stem or dead week stalk, and sit there scanning for prey (often turning their
heads watching the air traffic); when they find the right size prey within range, they dart out,
grab the prey, and quickly return to the perch to eat
… darners, spiketails, cruisers, and emeralds are usually fliers – on a good flying day (warm, no
rain), they fly for hours, catching insects in midair and swallowing them while continuing on

Went to iTunes
to manage my apps;
remove, update, copy,
sequence, align, taps.

Plugged in iPhone
to sort through apps;
those I bought
those been stowed.

Download, upload, copy,
delete; icons pushed
and stacked and sent:
never crashed, never smooched.

Neatly stacks them ’til a touch

Who came to the Poetry Reading?

Who came to the Poetry Reading?

Every April, Jan Hutchinson stages a poetry reading of her April Poetry Month Prompts
with the help of Cecile at the Roe Jan Library in Hillsdale, NY.
From 230 writers, we gleaned some 30 who shared their work with us.

Some of them played and sang,
some strummed and intoned,
some recited lyrics hankering for a melody,
some read, carefully rocking us with their chants,
some made us laugh with absurdity.

Some shared secrets,
some tweeted scant phrases that fit in the cracks,
some whispered; some shouted,
some wrote; some didn’t,
some gestured in polka-dotted tights.

Jan read too, modestly,
elegantly pulling the whole thing together,
a wide track from Great Barrington to Hillsdale,
from meadows to ponds, from hills and vales,
reaching even to Armenia’s 16 year old bards.

Three years in a row:
seeds planted
poems bloomed:
poetry’s Boo-Peep
and her sheep.

Circle the Pose That is Different...

Circle the Pose That is Different…

I have been working with 3 year old Oliver
in a reading workbook which has him circle DIFFERENT and SAME.
Meanwhile I discovered he can print all the letters of his name.
Especially, he prefers them rocketing in a diagonal thrust toward the stars.
He likes to swirl his sister’s skirts on top of overalls, sporting bare feet.
Seems he’s the model for “different” or aren’t all 3 year old brothers, enamored of their older sisters, the “same”?
Here they are,
in the same place,
at the same time each Thursday,
walking the run-way
swirling the fabrics
strutting the ruffles:
e-fashionista!
