The American
April 4, 2017 (Field Guides)
American
I am a continent
surrounded by two mighty oceans
a middling zone
feet at equator
skies with moon and sun;
earthly mountains and vales
dessert creatures underground
flower blossoms blowing in the wind
majestic and humble
all at once an altar for my God.

Field Guide
Once, in the cool blue middle of a lake,
up to my neck in the most precious element of all,
I found a pale-gray, curled-upwards pigeon feather
floating on the tension of the water
at the very instant when a dragonfly,
like a blue-green iridescent bobby pin,
hovered over it, then lit, and rested.
That’s all.
I mention this in the same way
that I fold the corner of a page
in certain library books,
so that the next reader will know
where to look for the good parts.

A sunny day in Austerlitz on Spring Break
I huddle under thunder-hail
heated-with high-speed internet.
The grands explore the creek and its mysteries-
sun-dappled creatures swimming by.
Grand trees grab sun and lichen-
Grands celebrate forces of nature.
All generations bow before beauty
in the rain, sun, valley and mountains.

Footnotes
The word “Easter” and most of the secular celebrations of the holiday come from pagan traditions. Anglo Saxons worshipped Eostre, the goddess of springtime and the return of the sun after the long winter. According to legend, Eostre once saved a bird whose wings had frozen during the winter by turning it into a rabbit. Because the rabbit had once been a bird, it could still lay eggs, and that rabbit became our Easter Bunny. Eggs were a symbol of fertility in part because they used to be so scarce during the winter. There are records of people giving each other decorated eggs at Easter as far back as the 11th century.

I was a nun-for-fun
A bun in the oven
A hun in the honey
A run in the stocking
A sun in the darkness
A ton of good cheer.
I won a nun-prize:
PRIVACY!
No puns
No guns
No done deals
But daily becoming
A nun for real.
